Pimples: Types, Prevention, and Treatment

Pimples are one of the dermatological conditions that affect people, especially teenagers. There are different types and understanding them can help you know how to manage and treat them.

The whiteheads mostly occur on skin that’s oily; blackheads appear when the clogged material in the pores pushes out; papules happen when the stuff inside the clogged pores becomes infected, while cysts are the deep pus-filled pimples.

Blackheads and whiteheads form when sebum and dead skin cells clog pores. The pore stays open at the top while the rest is clogged. This leads to the black color seen on the surface. The whitehead, however, is formed after the pore closes at the top. The pimple looks like a bump that’s protruding from the skin.

Prevention and Treatment of pimples

Treating acne depends on age, type of pimples and the severity. Most dermatologists will prescribe over the counter medications including creams, gels, lotions, soaps, medicated pads, and ointments. These either contain sulfur, salicylic acid, benzoylperoxide or resorcinol. The medication can cause side effects, and you should go back to your doctor if you notice burning, redness, or irritation of your skin.

Laser treatment is another option where pulsed laser lights are used to kill the bacteria in acne. It helps keep the acne under control while preventing recurrences in the future. The physician will use this together with laser skin resurfacing to help the skin smoothen and fade the scars.
